Finished Blue Highways and enjoyed it.....a couple of reasons why......

1.  Six Calendar Cafes:

0.  same as interstate pit stop
1.  pre-processed food assembled in New Jersey
2.  only if fish trophies are present
3.  can't-miss on the farm boy breakfast
4.  try the ho-made pie too
5.  keep it under your hat or they'll franchise
6.  can't miss...found 1 in the Ozarks....left me searching ever since.

2.  "weather to give a man the weary dismals."

3.  "These are the days when parents accomodate children."

4.  "Guarantee you one thing, Wim. This boy wouldn't sleep up here mongst the whangdoodles without his peace of mind." (tapped a thumb on his pistol)

Sigh----I guess I'll have to start actually buying books now that I don't work at the library anymore.  I don't have the patience to be on the waiting list at the public library for the popular reading books.

The long way to get around to the point that I LOVE JOHN SANDFORD!  There's a new James Lee Burke book out now too, Ric, that's about Katrina.  I only read about half of it, then I moved and had to turn it back in....sigh again.

Albertmorris, try this one for your book club...."Same Kind of Different As Me."  I guarantee it's thought-provoking.  You read it, and let me know what you think.  It will only take you a few hours.

I do, too... particularly the Lucas Davenport novels... I can take or leave the Kidd books... I'll get this one to ya when I finish..

I REAlly like Burke.. you can smell the wet spanish moss when he writes about it.. and see and almost feel the oyster shell driveweays prevelant to the area.. and when he talks about food... he is spot on.. I was reading one of his last night, and he was talking about an onion & ham sandwich.. Had to get up and make one...

Thanks, Tennisgal. I will read and report back....

Read a J. Kellerman book last evening....The Web.  I have reached the conclusion that it is better to give some time between books when reading an author. Habing gone through a stage when I'd start an author and read most/all their books, well, they got a little sameish. It was nice to see Dr. Delaware again.

BBS, the photo below is for you....please note the bottom right corner of the window......(from Blue highways):smile:

While seldom making decisions on hypotheticals, using "what ifs" to go back in history can be a fun exercise....for example, if Lou Brock had kept up his grade point average and not gotten a C+ GPA his first semester at Southern University, lost his academic scholarship, gotten depressed and gone to the baseball diamond and shagged flies for 5 days to let off steam, impressed the coaches enough to let him take 5 swings in batting practice at which time he hit 3 over the fence and ended up making the baseball team, would he have not had a baseball career, gotten traded from the Cubs to the Cardinals in'64 and led them to the Pennant, then the Phillies would have won and the hearts of all 12 year old Phillie fans would not have been broken.....but that is just "what if he'd kept his grade point average up."

Or, what if the Abraham Lincoln had actually won his Senate seat in 1858, at which time he would not have run for President because he believed he would have been a better Senator than President, would the United States exist as it does today?

There are hundreds of other "what ifs", ripple affects that have changed history. "What if it's a popular book....." would have virtually no ripple affect, hence, does not qualify in our scenerio.

Besides, there is Half-Price, one can wait till it comes in, one can go to another library to get it, one can call a friend who does have it.....there are lots of options. I suppose some of these could be life-changing, if, for example, one goes to the library, they don't have it, drives to Barnes and Noble and gets hit by a bus....or drives to Starbucks, runs into a buddy who has it, tells you the story-line, totally irritating you and you choke him to death.....I suppose those could be ripple affects.

But really, it is not that big a deal in the scheme of things.

Last night.....I unpacked 11 boxes of books to place on my 2 new bookcases that I had built in my house!  This was AFTER I had already taken 7 boxes to Half Price to sell.

Many of them are just generic paperbacks (if you can call the entire John D. MacDonald collection generic!), John Sandford, etc.  And I have a lot of children's books too.  But DANG, there is nothing that makes me feel comfortable like a houseful of books.....my bookcases are spectacular!

But....I don't like to buy books from Half Price...weird....I don't mind borrowing books from friends, but I don't like to buy a book that somebody else has thumbed.  Call me crazy.  I'll just buy them...I put them into my budget.

But Ric...I would LOVE your copy of the new John Sandford....ya wanna meet at the Goodyear store?  LOL!

I'll let ya know when I'm finished with it... and yeah, we can do that... :)

I'm the same way.. I buy from Borders mostly, because if you join their deal-scmeel, you get all kinds of coupons by email. Just used a 40% off any best seller... they send coupons all the time...

What I like about B&N, is you get 10% off all the time, plus the coupons they send you monthly. But it costs $25 for the year.

I never borrow popular reading books from the library (except the library where I worked) and then I was either the first person to get it, or just a few others had it before me.

I think the reason Half Price bugs me is because they have so many paperbacks and they are kind of beat up, and I can't stand it when I see a page that has lipstick or a finger smudge on it.  ICK.
