So, I'm feeling really good.  We have a young college student who is one of our runners back and forth to the bank; I see her every day because of where I sit.  She's cute, she's funny, and very very young.  She's on the President's List at North Texas, on scholarship, grants and loans and was raised by her grandmother.  Her mother is a homeless drug addict and if she wants to go see her mom, she starts looking on the streets.

Anyway, the other day I asked her how things were going and she just started talking about how hard it was to save money to begin the fall semester.  She has moved out of the dorm into a university apartment complex and will no longer be on the meal plan.  She has nothing to get started and her scholarship and grants won't come in until September 1.  She moves into the apartment on August 23 and they require upfront deposits, etc.  She said she had just enough to get in and buy books.  All she wanted was two new towels for her bathroom.  She broke my heart because she works very hard and is quite intelligent.  She will work part time on campus and tutor kids in the afternoons.  Right now she's working full time as summer help as our runner.

I went home that night and loaded up a huge shopping bag full of bathroom soaps, girlie stuff, bath poufys, cleaning products, toilet paper and paper towels.  I gave them to her and she did nothing but cry.  Apparently no one has ever been so thoughtful to her and that breaks my heart even more.  But, I feel like I can help out this young girl by providing some of the little things.  I'll ask her what her colors are in her bathroom and maybe surprise her with towels and a bathmat.

That was nice Texie. Little things can make a big difference. Sometimes people have not seen good in others, for whatever reason. That was very nice of you, and I'll bet you did not even think about doing it.

Thanks, Gumpy.  It was easy to pull all that stuff together.   I just didn't realize how much I had and have made a mindful decision to be more careful with my purchases.

She said she needs a pair of jeans.  I may give her a gift card to Wal-Mart.  I just hope she doesn't think I'm interfering but she just needs a little help now and then.

Any way to set up an account that some of us DD members can kick into with spare change and such?

The DD Fund is set up to accept donations for SPECIFIC disbursements also..... NOT just for the general fund....

I.E. Anyone can donate $$ and instruct the Treasurer to insure those monies go to a specific person/project....

JSYK....

I appreciate the offers and I will see what else we can do for her.  I don't want to inundate her with too much right now.

Yeah you can get away with saying, that you are involved in a "group" that likes to pick a special person to do something for that is doing their part in life.... that way she doesnt feel like a charity case.

It's like a scholarship fund or something.. just sayin..
