Then in 11th grade ( around January of 1976 ---- maybe our paths crossed ), our FBLA ( Future Business Leaders of America ) club went to Baltimore ( to see Social Security HQ, among other sites ) and DC.  Got to see the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum ( still a favorite ) and ride the subway tram underneath the Capitol.

Returned during the summer of 1981 as a college graduation present.  Got to stay for almost 3 weeks this time ( stayed with the family of a HS friend who lived in Northern Virginia ), as opposed to a really looong day for each field trip.

This was the trip I associate with "Black Water," because of a guy I met through a friend.  We discussed music, among many other topics........

I made good use of the Metro, explored to my heart's content for days on end, and had a blast !!

Also got to spend several days there one summer in the early 1990's and haven't been back since.  I seriously need to return.

Have never seen the Doobie Brothers, though.  Would have loved to, especially the 1980's incarnation.

Mom usually complains every time she comes back from vacation.  However, she loved her trip to DC (except for her surprise bladder infection) and raved about everything.  Oh no, one thing...she said not to go when the school kids are on Spring Break.

BBS - I think I went Thanksgiving weekend 1975 - I graduated in May 76.

We went to the Smithsonian (Air & Space museum was not quite ready for public yet) - all the usual monuments, the capitol building, the Mint, the White House, Anapolis (went to a service on Sunday am there) and one of the early President's homes which name escapes me right now.  Ugh - senior moment.  I'll think of it later.

I took lots of pictures, but I don't remember what was said.  Wish I could go do that all again with lots more time.

Also, check to see if there's a Boy Scout Jamboree scheduled ---- the Air & Space Museum was overflowing with those young men in July of 1981 !!  And I'm thinking that's the first time I'd been to that museum, not in '76.

Sorta like not going to Vegas during COMDEX ( do they still have that ?? ) in November or National Finals Rodeo in December; lines are looong everywhere..............

Did y'all see the "To Fly" at A & S  ??  First Omni movie I'd ever seen, still my favorite.

Also got to see the National Symphony Orchestra perform patriotic songs, including "The 1812 Overture" ( with cannons :shades: ) & fireworks afterward near the Jefferson Memorial during that trip.

And on one of the school trips, we got a tour of the Library of Congress ---- what a fascinating place !!  Also the Mint, the National Archives, the Washington Monument, & the White House.

Yes, it is great, just not the best time for my Mom to be there fighting the crowds of children.

I truly enjoyed touring Fort Sumter ( the boat ride out there on a hot summer day was nice, too ).

I enjoyed nearby Fort Moultrie even more, because it was less crowded and I could wander around more.

Dang....I *really* want to visit that one too. *sigh*

Hey, when I was a kid, we visited the Coors plant in Denver. I can still remember the smell of that place. That and paregoric....those are the 2 scents/tastes that I can remember from my childhood.

I just read that peragoric has anise oil in it, I wonder if that's why I hate licorice now.
