I saw a grandma in a mini skirt and a tube top.  She didnt' have the body for this one for sure.

I saw a 450 lb man with baggy shorts and a tank top, and not much was left to the imagination.  The tank top didn't reach the top of the pants.  YEEEEWhttp://WWW.

I saw young girls in cut offs and some type of T shirts and rubber flip flops and every thing needed to be washed really bad.

Greasy hair, unshaved men, dirty clothes, untied shoes with the laces dragging, pants hanging below this kids butt, and a mother with a WAYYYY TOOOO TIGHT blouse so there were gaps in the front, and no bra.

an old man in one of those carts with shorts on and the "boys" were looking around the store.

I saw a lot of flesh today and the flesh I saw should have remained in seclusion.

and on and on and on

I am not any where near perfect, but when I go out, I try to at least be clean and not some what neat.   I care about what I look like in public.  I carry a brush or a comb in my car and will at least check my hair before I go inside ( I wear a hat and hate hat hair)

any way I just came to the conclusion that we as americans have given up caring about what we look like on a daily basis.  At work is some thing else, but running around we just don't seem to care any more.  What a shame.

Have you seen this too?

Cliff, you should be thankful we can walk around this way.  At least your wife and children don't need to walk around in a full burka or worse, worry about being blown up at a bus stop on your way to work in the morning.  A few unkempt people is a small price to pay for the freedoms we all enjoy.

Edited to add: my apologies if this came across as harsh however; I have been dealing with families this weekend who are literally struggling with the issues I raised above.

I get a kick how messy hair is in. I don't like it. DivaDaughter is into messy hair - they put their hair up in a messy ponytail.

While DivaDaughter took my parents to see their great-grandbaby, Grandmother told DivaDaughter to brush her hair. IT MADE IT FRIZZY!

On weekends sometimes I get up, bathe and go to the grocery store without any makeup on. That is a absolute no no in my Mother's book. Also it is an absolute no no in her book for me to ever skipping shaving on the weekend.

So what will my kiddos talk about me when I'm in my 80's?

I have come except the way people dress down over time, except for not dressing in better than everyday clothes for a funeral. Last year a guy my age walked into one wearing cargo shorts, south padre t-shirt & tennis shoes with grass stains.

Christopher Reeve gave an interview during the time he was living in London with his girlfriend. Back then it wasn't THE thing to do... be an American actor and live overseas. He was asked why they didn't live in America and he gave a number of reasons - a film project there, she was from there, he was tired of what the American people were becoming (an "it's all about me" mentality), and he made a comment which I've never forgotten.

He said that American women used to be really something. They knew how to behave and they knew how to dress out in public. But now it was commonplace to see women out and about in grungy clothes and hair curlers. (Yeah, this was an old interview). He said he was disappointed in how people treated themselves which to him was a larger symptom of how they probably treated other people - just a general lack of respect.

Now that's a pretty broad stroke of the brush, but there is an element of truth to it. Some people who have the "I don't care how I look" attitude often don't care about other people either. It's not always true, but the guy walking around in a "F*** You" t-shirt pretty much tells me he doesn't have much respect for anyone.

It was really a sad commentary when that young woman was asked to cover up on a SW flight a couple of years ago. Used to be that women had more modesty and decorum. Now they flaunt it all and we say "Yeah... way to go! Exercise your rights!"

Personally, I prefer to exercise my right not to give in to the trend of looking like I just rolled out of bed and have that "I don't give a patootie" attitude.

i will occasionally run into Walmart for a quick auto part or something, and
i will do the shorts, shirt, ball cap and flip-flops.  But, i'm usually fairly clean when i do this.

i will not go to Maggiano's dressed this way.   (Believe it or not, some will.)

Nor will i board a plane dressed this way.  (same thing)

or to a church, funeral, wake, etc.

some people take "lax" way too far. ..

i will never understand the "pants below the cheek" thing. . . . ever.

I don't want any laws that tell us what to wear.  That is an infringement of our liberties and self expression.  BUT why do we have to have laws to get us to be clean and decent in public.  WHen we go out looking like we are near death, it is a insult to those around us.  .  WHen we don't have any respect for ourselves how can we have any for those around us.  I know that is the goal of a few but it shouldn't be the social norm now.  We have really jumped the shark when it comes to self respect.  How sad.

Clothes do not make the man. I think that there has been a bit of over-reaction to this.. but I can see I'm in the minority.
Yes, Cargo shorts and tennies to a funeral is bad taste.. and that fool lacked common sense.
Now, if this were a thread about Americans losing their common sense.. well that'd be different.
It would obviously be our fault, just as the way the young go about their business. Obviously we didn't prepare them well.... though, I am sure none of my grown children go anywhere looking like any of the folks you describe. Me OTOH.. there are times I am headed to the Box Store or the grocery, since I do all the Krogering.. and the wife will stop me and say.. go change. Go figure. My kids wouldn't.. and I would.
Hey.. if its an event.. or work (I still wear a tie).. or a place that I am sure to run into someone.. I try and be presentable.
Its 105 today.. I did yardwork all day.. showered, and threw on some old shorts and a Mavericks T, and went to the grocery. I'm a terrible man... Is there a support group I might attend???

Gotta disagree with you there.

that girl who was asked to cover up ..the one showing a bit of cleavage was dressed more modestly than Dolly Madison. I see nothing wrong with a woman showing cleavage..in fact I enjoy it..the new puritanical styles employed by some women in the Midwest leaves much to be desired..in fact I find much of it and the attitude behind it quite revolting.

I'm not talking about tube tops and 300 Lb women here but if a woman does have the body to go along with the fashion then she should feel free to wear it..its about time things swung back toward more of a feminine sexuality and away from Mormon puritanical garments

snide comment there Chronos,  very snide.    My comments had nothing to do with this at all.  I am talking about our loss of self respect and how we look out in public.  Yes your comment was out of line.

Because we think making a statement must mean we have something to say.

Funny how some people can dress like a slob and not come off like one, while others can dress to the nines and...

Maybe not about losing our common sense. Most assuredly about some people losing their mirror.

Some people can pull it off. Others can't.

A few years ago I rode in an MLK Day parade, right behind a drill team from a local high school. "Behind" being the key word.

A very small drill team, from a very big high school - which sadly doesn't boast much involvement in extra-curricular activities (at least, as traditionally defined). And while I have to hand it to those young ladies for at least being involved - short, high skirts were not what most of them needed to be wearing. And every time the parade slowed, they'd break it down. And I mean, BREAK it down.

Right in our faces.

For one thing, I'm not especially fond of modern cheerleading moves. I hadn't really noticed until I started coaching football a few years ago - and saw what the 8, 9 and 10 year old girls were doing. First time I see the daughter do any of that, she's off the squad. Call me a prude, but I'm a dad first - and there's a time and place for everything. And if you're a Mavs or Desperado Dancer, good for you. But not at 8 years old.

And not if you're 17, and your girdle is threatening to burst and pop someone's eye out.

Now I know that's not politically correct. It's discriminatory. But I would think a parent ought to love his or her daughter enough to be honest with their child, and say "Honey, I love you...but maybe if you want to be on the squad we ought to lighten up on the 6-piece chicken meal with fries and gravy". Of course we do tend to feed our wants rather than fill our needs - and God knows, we can't go damaging anyone's self esteem.

Beg pardon, but our problem is frequently esteeming ourselves too highly.

Anyway, the net result of some parents caring more for feelings than decorum was a Camaro that nearly ran off the road several times - and four guys who eventually bailed out and decided to walk behind the car. Getting run over by the marching band behind us rather than catching another glimpse of someone's moneymaker seemed the better part of valor.
