Labs are my favorite, and she's a cutie.
Remember, she's a retriever. If you get her going right, she will play "fetch" all day long and into the night. My brother's lab loves to dive (retrieve) in the pool, too. Labs need (and deserve) LOTS of affection. They especially love being scratched behind the ears and the back of the head. Very, very loving dogs.
Get a good brush.
EXACTLY!!!!my bestest friend has a lab who is now 13 and still loves to play fetch and dive into the pool...jude, so happy for you...and your story about your son at the gas station, God works in mysterious ways..

Thanks everybody! Still doing okay with really no chewing problems beyond the first night. She understands "no" very well. Tried to nibble on the hose and one no stopped that - hasn't looked at it since. I do have heaps of chew toys of all varieties which I prompty place in her mouth when ever she gets mouthy.
Potty training....ehhhhhh.... I hope we get there soon and am glad I didn't replace the carpet yet! She's so far not shown an interest in digging either, but I have a place in the back yard that I can dump a load of sand... maybe she will kill the neighbors bamboo that creeps into that side at the same time. LOL

Labs are wonderful dogs. If you get the daily paper, it is simple to teach them to fetch it. We stopped taking the paper but Max is so used to fetching it every morning that I have to throw a training dummy out there every morning for him. He lives to fetch the paper.
He is 3 now and has stopped most of his destructive chewing. So far, we are down a couch, love seat and a recliner!

I think what I love most about my lab is he does not run off, he comes when he is called. I did not work with him enough on fetching when he was little. The only thing he likes to fetch is golf balls (because they got hit into the yard all the time when we lived on the golf course in Rowlett). My lab also does not like water which surprises me even today.
Your lab will shed a lot less than your BB did, there is no undercoat to deal with. Get Mia a Kong to chew on, they cannot wear them out and they are made out of rubber that stands up to active chewing real well.

Cliff wrote: From personal experience you will need LOTS of chew toys for about 2 yrs. It take about 2 yrs for them to "grow up". My golden lab went through dozens of hoses before she out grew it. She just loved to chew on rubber things and the hose was always there. But once they grow up, they are some of the best dogs in the whole world.
Glad the hole in your heart is starting to heal. And Mia looks like a good keeper.
+1 We have had Labs for 20 years and the chewing in the early years can be a challenge along with the digging. But, they are great dogs who want to please although they can have a stubborn streak. They also are great with children around.

hey, Jude - what Roders said about the Kong - GET ONE! And put a smear of low fat peanut butter inside and stick a kibble or treat inside. Then throw it into her crate every time you want her to go in. She will RUN inside - at least that is what Peanut does. It doesn't take but a little bit of pb for him - he is so small. But it is a great treat. I've read that people with bigger dogs can fill them with food kibble and a little water - freeze them - then give them the frozen kong in the am before the leave for work. The dog will work at it for hours (so they say).
Also, get a giant jingle bell from hobby lobby or somewhere and get a command hook and a ribbon and put the bell on the door frame that Mia will be going out to potty - every time you take her out, ring the bell just before you open the door. She will learn to ring the bell when she needs to go out to tinkle - worked like a charm with Peanut! Saves your door from scratches, too.
I'm sending you a pm about training -----

Kong will be on the list tomorrow! I like the idea of the frozen water and I've always wanted to try the bell thing. Hopefully, we can get that to work. So far, potty training isn't going so well....... #2 okay, #1, not so good, but I sort of think that's because she is so young. I'm guessing closer to ten weeks than twelve.
