Okay... Many of you know that my long time companion, the lovely BB girl, passed <with my help> last week.

I spent four days and nights crying and grieving as should be.

Well, let me tell you a story.

I think I'm sleep deprived. Last week was hell and too emotional.  I decided to get real busy and had been helping my neighbour do a real deep clean at her house and rewax 50 year old parquet flooring.  Was wiped out after 3 days and was enjoying a few cocktails Wednesday night admiring our work when I get a call from son 2 at about 10pm.  He'd run out of gas at about Columbia and Fitzhugh and needed a gas can.

Ugh.  So, I walk home, get a gas can and go to meet him.  I arrive where he was SUPPOSED to be and no kid, no car, no nothing.  I ask in the store where he had called from <he'd left his cell at home> and they said, yeah, he was here but some customer had a gas can so he left.  Grrrr.. I'm still kinda worried tho?

So I drive to the three nearest gas stations and couldn't find him.  Decided to come home and think on what to do when he calls me from home saying he'd gotten a can and gas from someone.

I blow in the back door about 11 and start in on "Where in the hell were you!!!!" but didn't get halfway through it.  Both kids are standing there grinning and Brian says really quickly.. "It's okay mom somebody loaned me a gas can and look what I brought home for you".... all in a run on sentance.  I said, "WHAT?" and there, sitting in front of the fireplace is about a 10-12 wk old lab puppy.  Oh joy.  Well, I couldn't toss her outside.. it was really late, and she really was a sweetheart.. so.... even tho it was a bit too soon, I now have another dog.  Haha!  He'd found her in the parking lot at a Conoco gas station on Columbia and she kept following him.  Nobody there knew who she belonged to, in fact there was nobody else there at all.  Only the attendant and he was inside.

I drove the neighborhood looking for signs and the only "lost" signs I saw were for a white chihuahua and a 2yr old lab. I think that's what they were for, heck they were all in Spanish.   Had Brian take a fecal in for testing and she has no worms.   Was pretty clean and in very good shape except for a worn spot on her tail which I think she'd been chewing on because she had a lot of fleas.  Took her to the vet the next afternoon and she checked out fine. No collar, no microchip.   Started her vaccinations, but I think she'd already had one round.  By then, we'd already named her.  It WAS Mija <term of endearment for an usually young female in Spanish, considering where she was found and her knowledge of "aki" and other simpler spanish terms> but quickly was shortened to just Mia.  I guess not as many people speak Spanish as I thought... We kept trying to explain her name.

She keeps me up all night.  I should have named her Dr. Pepper. 10-2-4-and 6 she's hollering her head off.  Either she's never been in a crate before or was in one too much.  Love her dearly but I'm pooped!

I gotta find out about Labs tho.... Shepherds were a snap, at least in my memory, compared to this little creature.  She's pretty good about chewing on her toys only but she has tried to eat the hardwoods ONCE and took a fair chunk out of a cheap Target rug.  I've got her either kenneled or contained in the parts of the house that have no nice furniture or knicknacks and only really worn out rugs which I plan to toss anyway.  I guess I'll consider them training tools!

She's actually pretty good and hasn't been a big problem.  Understands "no", "come", and I'm having some success in getting her distracted and getting a toy when she chews on things.

I've never ever even entertained the idea of a Lab - in fact I've always been very reluctant to having one.  I've only raised GSD's and they are ENTIRELY different creatures!  But... I've got her and I'm going to keep her. So, any ideas on Lab training are especially appreciated!  It WAS a little too soon, but WTH was I supposed to do?  See?  Oh.. and ps... the vet says to expect an 80 lb pooch... I need a new car!  I could barely squeeze BB at 78 lbs in the back of the mustang!

pps...my brother, who had to euthanize my BBgirl's half brother two months ago is getting a real kick out of this.  They've not taken the jump with another pooch, and say it's my kids getting back at me because I am paying too much attention to them and I need a dog to distract me!

So...... what do you think?  A keeper????

Ahhh~! What a cutie!

I had a pm all written to you last week, about getting a pup to fill up the space left by your beloved girl.  But I didn't send it.  I thought it was too soon.  But, as you know, my hubby decided we were without a dog too long about 4 weeks after Sebastian died and surprised me with Peanut - who has been so much fun!

Your new girl will never replace your other one, but she will fill up the space and you will love her in time.  She won't be the same, but she will become yours.

Give her a good scratch behind the ears for me!

My friend has a beautiful yellow lab who is very well trained - I think by a well known trainer in Ennis.  I'll be glad to get the name for you if you like.  He is about 5 years old and an AMAZING dog.

edited to say:  thanks to your son for rescuing that beautiful dog.

Thanks, Knot.. I'm truly treading unfamiliar waters.  The breeds are SO different!  I'm hoping I can handle it, and so far <3 days> so good.. but I might take you up on the trainer recommend!

Scratch behind the ears done!

Ahh, yes, they do... and they've been a great help.  But dangit.. I JUST got the floors vacuumed!  And I agree with my bro.  I think the kids think if I'm focused on the pooch I won't be so much "in their business!"  LOL

Labs do chew (a lot) when they are young...in a couple of years, she'll have grown out of it. I almost shipped our lab off to a farm a few years ago, but Louie was such a good companion for Mac in his last days, I'll keep him forever.

Here's Mac and Louie when Louie was still a pup.

Yeah...about 85 pounds.

He has white 'socks' and a white 'ascot'. Pretty boy and a good one, too.

Decide where her "digging" spot is gonna be. Cuz she's gonna dig. She'll chew like crazy, too.

Labs are my favorite, and she's a cutie.

Remember, she's a retriever. If you get her going right, she will play "fetch" all day long and into the night. My brother's lab loves to dive (retrieve) in the pool, too. Labs need (and deserve) LOTS of affection. They especially love being scratched behind the ears and the back of the head. Very, very loving dogs.

Get a good brush.

From personal experience you will need LOTS of chew toys for about 2 yrs. It take about 2 yrs for them to "grow up". My golden lab went through dozens of hoses before she out grew it. She just loved to chew on rubber things and the hose was always there. But once they grow up, they are some of the best dogs in the whole world.

Glad the hole in your heart is starting to heal. And Mia looks like a good keeper.
