WASHINGTON—Confirming years of speculation, a new study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Health Monitoring System has found that red meat significantly increases the risk of premature death in cows. "Our research suggests that by having red meat, a cow's life can be shortened by as many as 10 years, sometimes more," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in an interview with CNN Tuesday. "Unfortunately, in some cases, even just a single daily serving of red meat can hurt a cow's chances of surviving past the earliest stage of life." On a more positive note, researchers found that other high-protein foods like milk, cheese, and butter only decrease a cow's life by 7 to 9 years.

EATING MEAT helped early humans reproduce. “If early humans had been vegans we might all still be living in caves, Swedish researchers suggested in an article Thursday. When a mother eats meat, her breast-fed child’s brain grows faster and she is able to wean the child at an earlier age, allowing her to have more children faster, the article explains. That provided a distinct competitive advantage for early humans when limited resources and a small population made it difficult for them to thrive.”
One of the most interesting things about WWI was how much in awe, the people of Europe were about the size of the men in the American Expeditionary Force. Americans had never gone overseas in large numbers before, especially a bunch of farm boys, and Europe was just emerging from a patriarchal society, where the peasants and common people consumed very little beef or venison. So the size and stamina of the American youth was very remarkable. It really helped propel America into a role as a World Leader.

Emmm, so all female bovines live out there lives in dairies? I don't think so.
IME, cows are used primary for two things: making babies, or being dairy cows. Some cows do end up as beef, but the beef is a lower quality than that of steer. Those cows are usually sent off because they're bad mamas or it's time to thin the herd.
