I just replaced a CFL in the kitchen that had been in use a couple of years. Replaced it with an incandescent.

I've progressively changed to CFL all through the house for 4 years. I have had to re-replace 2, but one was a faulty fixture. I'm thinking some of the Hg is gaseous so don't break and inhale. Putting those in the trash is no worse than putting cellphones, computers, batteries, etc., in the trash but....its better to dispose of properly if you can. More places will become available with time. Some communities sponsor a hazmat material day where you can bring old pesticides, paint, etc to a central location for disposal.

When I built my house I put them in every fixture in December 2005, I have had to replace maybe three or four. To dispose of them I take a plastic grocery sack and tie them in it and toss in trash.
I personally believe they are cheaper to burn and have used them about everywhere I am paying the electric in.
Started putting them in vacant apartment in 2007 when bulbs needed replaced. Noticed people started taking them when they left. I went back to the blubs that cost 40 cents each.

when they came out I put lots of them in my house. Then I took ALL OF THEM OUT. They were terrible. Then they came out with a newer version and I put some more in my house. I took most of them out. I have about 6 left and I am not putting more of them any where. I HATE THEM. I don't like the light, I hate the looks of them and they don't last.
I will just wait for the LED ones to get cheaper. The LED ones are terribly expensive right now. but they too will get cheaper as they make more. But I really hate most of the curly Florescence one and wont' buy any more.

I only use them for area illumination lamps. ie, a lamp I turn on and leave on all evening so that area/room is not pitch black. For that they seem to work well and may save me a few pennies.

I do have a stoopid question that just came to me, has anyone ever had one of these suppossedly long life compact flourescents last as long as advertised. I bought some that were suppossed to last 5 years, and all of them crapped out in less than 2. They were all bought at Lowes or the Depot, before it became chic to buy the damnable things.
I hope when the republicans take back the house, they do away with the mandate to go to them. I cannot remember many dumber ideas going through congress, until PBO took office and took the silliness even further.
The one in my garage is at least 5 years old, on continuously. So, I expect it will burn out tomorrow.
The 2 I installed on the front door light (16ft up in the air) burned out in less than a year only on when I was expecting company.
I can't remember Brad standing on the island in the kitchen in the last three years - so at least three. When we had regular - he was up there at least once a year - so much so that the plastic cover broke once the first year we were here. I had to find a place to make a new one. It broke again around 2000 - the company has gone out of business and Lowe's or wherever Brad took it - shrugged their shoulders.
