I disagree, dublusk,....heated exchanges can/do happen.  Name calling, vulgar things get deleted.

I think it is possible to be passionate and have a vigorous exchange without vulgarity.

Me too, never said vulgarity should be allowed. I just don't see any names on this board. It is well policed and monitored.

MIsunderstood your intention--I thought you wanted "free for all" down and dirty on the board.

Nope, there are other places for that! And I play there too.

I think there's a HUGE difference (at least to me) between being passionate and just plain rude/ugly.    One may disagree without being disagreeable.    The ability to sit hundreds, maybe thousands of miles away enables people to feel braver to be rude to others they might not do if that person were sitting right next to them.

I notice people like George Will or Daniel Moynihen able to make their points with great wit, intelligence, humor and civility.   I think their points are made with passion but great eloquence as well.

I see those people who start name calling, using pejoratives and childish insults as having Mark Levine, Lynn Samuels or Michael Savage complexes.    They love to feel superior to others and acting rude somehow helps them achieve that status.

If I were paid to be rude I believe I would be pretty good at it.

No question.   It has made them all wealthy people by appealing to the worst in all of us.   Using silly insults to put down people is great.....when it's someone or some idea you don't care for.    A lot of people who have been attacking Bush with insults like "chimp" suddenly get very offended when bush defenders are suddenly delivering attacks on Obama.
